You should ensure a routine for studying, and take frequent breaks while trying to make sure that your environment is well lit. Take foods that are light and easily digestible, and should avoid foods rich in sugars or very heavy meals.

Tips to Avoid Sleep While Studying

Each point is explained clearly for better understanding.

1. Create a Comfortable Study Place

Choose a particular area for learning with proper lighting, a strong chair. Do not study on bed because it can make one sleepy. If you are serious about your academic work, the physical environment of your study area should become important to enhance you study skills.

2. Organize Your Books and Notes

Categorize your material by subjects or topics to ensure you access them easily. To ensure that you do not waste time moving around the house looking for something then it is most advisable that you keep all your necessities in one place. Other benefits include a clean study environment that reduce stress while more focus is achieved. Having color coded folders or study note can always make organizing more fun or can be easier.

3. Use Short Study Breaks

Make use of time by breaking studying time into segments e.g. 25 minutes of study, then take a break for five minutes. This is referred as the Pomodoro Technique which in a way makes your mind fresh and help one avoid getting sleep with long hours. It also teaches one how to plan his/her time span well.

4. Casual Walk

A casual walk boosts the blood flow and wakes up your brain. When the time comes for you to take a break from studying, walk around the entire house or even on your terrace for a short span of time. It refreshes your brain and does not allow you to get tired.

Example: Every time you finish a topic, stand up and walk for few minutes around your living room, and drink water.

5. Eat Snack

Eating a snack during study time is also useful, but you must take a minimal amount of snack. For snacks, rather than taking a sweet that is high on sugar calories, it is better to take foods high on proteins or fiber such as nuts, fruits or yogurt. Food that you should exclude from your diet include those that cause fat accumulation and make you feel dull.

Example: Replace chips for a handful of almonds and raisins for energy and a snack that will last.

6. Eliminate Distractions

Your phone is one of the distractions like social media, calls, and emails which is one of the reasons when you are studying. One should mute the notifications, or switch on ‘No Disturbance mode’ not to be interrupted while studying. If necessary, put your phone in another room in order not to distract you with your study time.

7. Drink Water

Always make sure you have a bottle of water near you when studying, and make sure to take a sip of it from time to time. The more you drink water, the more awake you feel and keeps you healthy.
